This is the last day to work on your assignment. There is no excuses as you were provided 1/2 day Wed, Thursday, Friday, Monday and now 2 hours on Tuesday. You will also provided time in Mr. Arndt's class to get everything ready. If you didn't use your time wisely.... you might be feeling the pinch right now!!!

Wednesday to Friday
Talk about bringing back memories for this assignment.... It would be 2005-2006 my first exposure to mixing music! Mr. Young, Mr. Lys and I were a team of family teachers who "made" our family be a part of LIT (not the LIT the teacher's do on your early dismissal Mondays). We mixed different kinds of music together to create a performance. It was fun... the music mixing took awhile and practice. This is what we are going to be doing now.... Mixing random songs together.
1) Have your ear buds in for the whole lesson! (well after Ms. Rowe is done with the example)
2) Open Audacity - go to Windows, All Programs, Audacity
3) Play!!!! Yup, that is right PLAY! That is how you learn. You will find all the songs in the Communications Media folder in Global. Find the most interesting parts to the song and mix them together.
4) Have fun playing! You will be provided 3 hourrs of time to play. We will be listening to your mixes either Friday aif you are ready or on Monday.
5) Our next assignment will involve you, your voice and Audacity!

October 14 to October 18, 2013

  • We are going to learn about composition, image quality and connection to emotional response
  • We are going to be able to connect images to written response

Tuesday October 14 - Capturing images? Just point and shoot?
1) You need to capture 2 images. One image will portray sadness or fear and the other happiness. What does that mean? It is up to you. You can not use a human or animal in your images.
Terms to be aware of :
  • Composition - The way in which the different parts that make up a photograph or picture. Placement or arrangement of a visual image.
  • Image Quality - colors are vivid, images eye popping, clear, crisp
  • Emotional Response - images create an emotional response (fear, happiness, joy, laughter, sadness, etc...)

2) Edit the images on either our cellular device (Snapseed) works well for the iPhone. or any web based tool that you have been using. Make sure not to compromise the picture quality. Watch your crop. Don't crop too much as picture will be compromised.

3) Edited picture needs to be done and handed in to Ms. Rowe....BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE CLASSROOM. Yup... that means you need to NOT waste time. Not done... you return at 3:15 to finish.

Wednesday to Friday - Visual Verbal Essay.
1) Reflection - what did you notice about the pictures at the front? What worked? What was interesting? What about editing? Image Quality? Composition? Capturing of emotion?
2) Word and placement of Images. How can you use word effectively?
3) Visual Verbal Essay... Now your job is to capture images.

How do I finish my Visual Verbal Essay?
1. Choose events. List them.
2. Discuss why each event is important to the novel.

  • We are going to review and develop our pre production skills including details and time lines

Monday Oct 7 - All editing needs to be finished! Picture handed in. Make sure the blur is not on the pic. Clear editing is important.

Here is your editing checklist. This needs to be handed in with your written portion of your assignment.

Tuesday October 8 - Exploration Tuesday!
1) You are going to be working with a partner today if you choose. Remember that you will be allowed to choose your partners along as you are using your time wisely. Waste time.... Ms. Rowe then chooses who you work with. Mrs. Biro will give her an update to see how it goes.

2) Make an Exploration Tuesday page for your wiki. Why? We will be placing our information from what we find throughout our discovery. This is your third Exploration Day! This time you need to record what you find.

3) You are going to answer the following questions and at the end of the class you should be ready to share with the group. What I am noticing about your answers, some of you are a little short on the detail side of things. You like to provide an answer but it kind of looks like this "I would like to go to that place and get the stuff, because if I get that stuff I will get a better mark on that assignment that is supposed to be due sometime this week." You have a lot of words but there isn't really any meaning behind the words.
  • What post secondary programs are available in Canada when it comes to the Communications Media field?
  • What do the post secondary program offer in terms of skills and job opportunities?
  • What is the cost of a post secondary program?
  • What classes do you need to enter the program of choice? What average?
  • What are the essential skills from the Human Resource and Skills Development Canada?
  • What skills do you need to build a successful career?
* Remember Post Secondary does not just mean university *
3) Be prepared to share your information

Wednesday October 9, 2013 - What is today going to bring forth? Hmmmm for some of you your brain would be working on what you can try next when it comes to technology... for others.... you are just going to log on and find the best online game or Facebook. Both of those ideas (gaming and FB) started with a good plan and knowledge of the program being used.
Next week we are going to be joining with ELA in a Visual Verbal Essay. Knowing how to use programs will only help you with success.
1) Go to 50+Ways

Notice the tools that CogDog used to create the above the presentation. Which one was interesting for you?

What is the best way to know about the technical tools? Play! Use it! Don't say.... I am not good with computers (some of you did that with your reflections on preproduction).

What is the whole point of this? The point is to PRACTICE YOUR CRAFT AND GENERATE IT IN A NEW WAY!
This will be your last day.... Your last day to play. The next time you get a day like this there will be a presentation assignment that will go along with it.

Find a tool you are NOT familiar with. pic monkey, toondo, or any other program that you have used is OFF LIMITS.

Remember.... what you put into something is what you get out of it! Put in nothing and complain about everything.... That is what you get in return, a whole lot of nothing and no one listening. Try... Explore... Put in EFFORT... See what happens. I bet you will be surprised!

Thursday Oct 10 - Preproduction Reflection Day....
Period 4
1) We are going to be watching your videos.... Late but watching.

Wednesday Oct 2 -
We are going to be moving onto a class "PROJECT".
Your job over the next couple of days is to do a little self discovery. Like Katiness, you are learning about who you are, what your likes and dislikes are, and what represents you. Who do you want to be seen as? What image do you want representing you? How do you see yourself as a new grade 10 (well first month in 9 to go gr. 10)?
Firstly we need to look at the INSIDE OUT PROJECT

Thursday and Friday October 2&3 - The next couple of days are going to be spent capturing and editing your image, as well as doing a little writing about your Inside Out picture.

Make sure you have your black and white picture to Ms. Rowe. SOME OF YOU DO NOT HAVE IT HANDED IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IF YOU HAVE HANDED IN A #SELFIE.... YOU BETTER TRY AGAIN. ok the loud talking is done now.

September 23 to 27, 2013
What are we learning today?
  • We are going to explain effective strategies to create a production.
  • To determine the intention of a production, id content, predict audience effect, write a script, timeline, and make a storyboard.
  • We are going to id the software needed in media communications to produce the best end product.

Monday to Friday - We are going to be working on and finishing our Hunger Games Reality Show pitch assignment. I am going to warn you, this is one of those chances to waste a lot of time. I will not be providing you more time during class if you are not using the time provided to you effectively. You are invited to come into the lab during any lunch. If you need an ipad all you have to do is ask. Part of this class is to be able to problem solve. Figure out how you can work most effectively with the time provided. You will be responsible for a self evaluation at the end of this week.

1) Log on Ms. Rowe's wiki (which you should already be there as you are reading this)
2) Stand up and wait for further instructions - I am seeing who is reading and who isn't.
* Create a Glossary Page on YOUR wiki * This is where you will put the definitions that we discuss in Communications Media.

3) What does Media stand for? How do you define media? (this is the second time we have discussed this)
4) Ms. Rowe is going to get you into groups today. Each group is going to research the phases of media production.

I just sit and surf and then have nothing to show for it? NO!!!!! Look at the different ways of sharing information. You are to practice... play... explore.... see what is out there. But, here is the hitch, you need to be able to account for your time. Ms. Rowe will be asking you what site you used and what was good about it or what you didn't like. Now... Go explore on 50+Ways

ATTENTION GRADE 10'S - YOUR WIKI SHOULD BE LOOKING GOOD BY NOW. HOME PAGE READY TO GO. GLOSSARY PAGE CREATED. ALL ABOUT ME PAGE. COMMUNICATIONS MEDIA PAGE.

Don't Be a Squidward!!!!

We are going to be exploring sites that assist in photo editing These are great, web based, program that lets you edit your pictures to the way that you like. The reason we are looking at this is that over the next little while, when we are doing projects, I want you to have the freedom to be more visual with the pictures that you take and use in your projects. Sometimes it's just easy to go to Google and find a picture. Using these programs, I am hoping that you will be able to create more of your own pictures and present them the way that you want them presented. Lots of the skills you pick up will be from discovering things on your own. I want you to take control of your learning and figure out how to use these sites for your own use.

BeFunky
SumoPaint
ImageChef
PhotoShop Express
Aviary
FotoFlexer
PicMonkey

During these classes I am going to get you to look at 5 different pictures that you can use the sites above (or other sites or apps) to create a photo that is more meaningful to you (and more fun). I want you to look at the tools that you have on these websites and use them to your benefit to make them even more appealing than they already are.

Type of pictures to use:
1. A picture of a Teacher - Edit them up and we will print them off and give it back to them (Mr. Swanson/Mr.Stueby)
2. A picture story - Just like the one below, we can take a picture and tell a quick story
3. A picture of an object (skateboard, printer, hammer, etc.)
4. A picture of a group of people
5. A picture of your choice

Photo Story Example.jpg

You will then post the pictures to your wiki space (as well copy it into your Global folder) and include the following:
1. The original picture (unedited) - 1 mark
2. The new picture (with edits made in Picnik or BeFunky) - 2 marks
3. An explanation of which web tool you used to create your new picture (may need to keep a list). 3 marks Don't say... "It was easy to use" Be able to back up your answers and tell what features made it easy to use.

Each picture will be worth 5 marks based on using the editing tools in website you chose y to make an attractive picture that stands out more than the original one.

September 9 to 13, 2013

What are we learning today?
  • We will be able to identify various roles and influences of communication media in school and society.
  • We are going to create an effective power point and understand its purposes
  • We are going to know the terms, copyright, open source, creative commons, stock resources.
  • We are going to understand the need for consent .

Monday Sept 9, 2013
1) Find one person that you are going to work well with today. If you choose to work by yourself, that is totally ok!
2) Make sure you find a way to document your answers. Each person needs to have their own answers. You also need to find examples from the world wide web. Whatever examples you find is awesome!!!! If you find something really good and you want to share make sure you email me! All contact information is on my home page.
  • First question - Define media
  • What is the purpose for communications media?
  • Find an example of video, audio and interactive media.
  • Find examples of blogs, social networking, or any other communication tool.
  • How does communication affect others? Think of social networking
  • Find examples of how communications media can help others. Find examples how communications media can hurt others.
3) Let's discuss!!

Tuesday Sept 10, 2013
Exploration Tuesday - From you information that you collected yesterday about communications meda, you are to choose the most effective words that would do the following;
  • define media
  • explain the purpose of communications media
  • examples of media
  • how communications media affects others
  • good things social media does
  • bad things social media does and we need to be aware of (we are being proactive when it comes to the bad!)

Now that you have created your word list we are going to create a Wordle. Once you have completed your Wordle, save it to your network spot and print it out to put up in our room. Make sure you have a way to ID your Wordle. (Usually that is done by your name!).

When you are done (because this task should be done by the end of class, unless you are not using your time effectively) check out the following link - Cog Dog's 50 Ways

Wednesday Sept 11 and Thursday Sept 12, 2013

  • Explore various web based tools to display assignments that are completed throughout the semester

How are we learning it?

1. Our first task it to get to know each other. Who are you? Who am I? What guidelines do you need to be successful in Communications Media 10? Why is it called Communications Media 10 and not Information Processing 10?

2. You are going to be given the first 3 (and maybe some time from day 1) classes of the semester to create your wiki. I do need to get your wiki verified by the Wikispaces team so the quicker you come up with your school appropriate wiki name the better it is.

3. Create your own inspirational or motivational poster. This is something that reflects YOU! Not your buddy. Put on the poster something that you would say to another person to encourage them. Use whatever tool you want to get your finished product. Save it to you Comm Med 10 folder. DO NOT PRINT! When you are done the task, please work on your wiki.

Here are some of Ms. Rowe's Favs. Just "some" as she has a lot and you will be seeing them throughout the semester.
